But there is another aspect, far less visible, that often makes the real difference: the structure behind the service. Knowing a language is not enough to guarantee quality. What truly matters are processes, checks, traceability, competence management, revision and operational continuity. In other words: a method.
It is no coincidence that professional certification has become increasingly important in the world of translation and interpreting over the last few years. The webinars organized by AITI – Italian Association of Translators and Interpreters on 28 May and 4 June, dedicated to the UNI 11591:2022 standard, highlighted a key point: linguistic quality cannot rely only on improvisation or individual experience. It requires verifiable skills, defined criteria and shared standards capable of ensuring consistency, reliability and continuity over time.
There is still a common perception in our industry that language services are somehow “intangible”: a translation arrives, an interpreter steps into the booth, an event runs smoothly. End of story. In reality, every successful outcome depends on coordination, preparation, terminology management, technical checks, organizational skills and attention to detail.
This is precisely where certification gains its real value. Not as a formal or bureaucratic element, but as an operational choice. Getting the certification means committing to work according to defined, measurable and verifiable procedures. It means turning quality from a promise into a system.
