On Sunday, 10 August, Ocean Space will exceptionally keep its doors open until 10:00 p.m. to celebrate St. Lawrence Night with a free evening of art, music and a starry sky. In collaboration with the Municipality of Venice–Murano–Burano, the event will take place between the Church and Campo San Lorenzo and will offer activities for all ages: workshops for children, guided tours, a jazz concert and astronomical observation curated by the Venetian Amateur Astronomers Association.
During the evening, visitors will also be able to see the exhibition otras montañas, las que andan sueltas bajo el agua, accompanied by the cultural mediation team, who will guide participants in discovering both the artworks and the history of the church that hosts them.
But why 10 August?
Tradition links this date to the martyrdom of St. Lawrence, and in popular imagination the streaks of light in the sky are said to be his tears. In reality, they are the Perseid meteor shower: fragments of a comet that cross the Earth’s atmosphere every year. It is interesting to note how, even in language, we move from “meteors” to “shooting stars” and finally to “tears”: different words to describe the same phenomenon.
