This week we want to take you with us to France, where a very important event for the country took place, the elections! After the second round of the legislative elections in France, the country finds itself without an absolute majority in Parliament. Here is a summary of the results and possible future scenarios:
Emmanuel Macron: He neither won nor lost outright. His decision to dismiss the Assemblée drew criticism, but avoided a continued erosion of the government by the Rassemblement National. He will now face a difficult demi-cohabitation with the Républicains and part of the left.
Gabriel Attal: He has maintained an open stance towards a coalition of the ‘republican camp’ and avoided mistakes that other Macron allies have made, earning himself a solid position for the future.
Marine Le Pen: Unequivocally a loser. Victory in the European elections did not translate into success in the legislature. She has made many wrong moves and the party is still reminiscent of the old Front National. Her time may be over.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon: He wants to make believe he won, but he lost weight in the coalition and did not gain support as a prime ministerial candidate. His rigidities have alienated several allies.
Marine Tondelier: A rising star of the French left, she adopted a pragmatic approach and blocked Mélenchon’s ambitions, contributing to the birth of the Nouveau Front National.
There are various possible scenarios: A left-wing minority government with the New Popular Front that could form a minority government by seeking the occasional support of other parties to avoid no-confidence motions; Macron’s coalition, whose might attempt to form a coalition with moderates from the left and right, although many party leaders have already spoken out against this option; and finally a technical government, in which Macron could appoint a technocratic government with apolitical ministers to handle current affairs, although this solution is seen as impractical.
The situation remains uncertain, with the first session of the National Assembly scheduled for 18 July.
