April Fool’s Day is a tradition in many countries around the world, celebrated on 1 April with jokes and pranks of all kinds. The exact origin of this custom is not entirely clear, but it is believed to date back to the 16th century, when King Charles IX of France decided to move the start of the year from 1 April to 1 January. Some people, either out of ignorance or love of tradition, continued to celebrate the new year in April and were mocked by everyone as ‘April fools’, which is probably where the English name ‘April Fools’ Day’ comes from.
But why ‘Pesce d’aprile’ (April fish)? Various hypotheses have been put forward about the origin of this expression, which is only used in Italy, France, Belgium and the French-speaking areas of Canada and Switzerland. Some believe that this saying dates back to the time of Cleopatra, who, during a fishing competition, had a fake fish attached to her lover Mark Antony’s hook. More likely, however, the custom derives from the fact that fish are animals that easily take the bait: those who have been the butt of a joke take the bait just like a fish.
One of the most common pranks is to stick a paper fish on a friend’s back without them noticing. Over the years, however, the media, newspapers and companies have also started to participate in the tradition with fake news stories or absurd announcements, creating moments of surprise and fun.
Today, April Fools‘ Day continues to be an opportunity to laugh and lighten up the daily routine. However, it is important that pranks remain harmless and fun, without causing damage or discomfort.
