April Fools’ Day is a tradition observed in many countries around the world, celebrated on 1 April with all kinds of jokes and pranks. The exact origin of this custom is not entirely clear, but it is believed to date back to the 16th century, when in France King Charles IX decided to move the beginning of the year from 1 April to 1 January. Some people, either out of ignorance or out of attachment to tradition, continued to celebrate the New Year in April and were mocked as “April fools”, from which the English name April Fools’ Day probably derives.
But why “Pesce d’aprile” (April fish)? Several theories have been proposed to explain this expression, which is used only in Italy, France, Belgium and in the French-speaking areas of Canada and Switzerland. Some believe it dates back to the time of Cleopatra, who during a fishing contest is said to have had a fake fish attached to the hook of her lover Mark Antony. More likely, however, the custom comes from the idea that fish are easily caught by bait: those who fall for a prank “bite the hook” just like a fish.
One of the most common jokes, in fact, is sticking a small paper fish onto a friend’s back without them noticing. Over the years, however, the media, newspapers and companies have also begun to take part in the tradition with false news stories or absurd announcements, creating moments of surprise and amusement.
Today, April Fools’ Day remains an opportunity to laugh and lighten everyday routines. However, it is important that pranks always remain harmless and good-natured, without causing damage or discomfort.
