On 11 and 12 September, the Global Webinar on Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in Kenya took place. The event, promoted by UNESCO, UN Women and local institutions, brought together experts, academics and government representatives from around the world.
The webinar addressed a wide range of crucial issues. It first focused on femicide in Kenya, analysing its causes, trends and available data, with particular attention to how information is collected and classified at international level. Considerable space was then devoted to legal and policy frameworks, with experts presenting reforms and regulatory tools aimed at strengthening accountability and the protection of victims.
On the second day, the discussion centred on victim-focused justice services, on educational and cultural approaches to engage young people and men in the prevention of violence, and on the role of the media and the creative arts in promoting empathy, justice and social change. Finally, attention was given to funding models and sustainability, which are essential to ensure long-term resources for policies aimed at combating gender-based violence.
