In the debate about artificial intelligence applied to language services, there is often a tendency to portray AI as an autonomous entity that can translate, adapt, and reformulate texts fluently and flawlessly. But the reality is very different: every language model that “understands” and “speaks” a language today is the result of the work of hundreds, often thousands, of human beings.
Behind an output generated in seconds, there are translators who have annotated corpora, computational linguists who have defined syntactic rules, terminologists who have edited glossaries and datasets. Even the most advanced models, such as those based on neural networks, must be “trained” with curated, clean, relevant data-a job that requires extremely refined linguistic and domain expertise.
And it doesn’t end there. Once produced, the text must be revised, adapted, harmonized. Those who work in localization, transcreation, or technical writing know this well: AI is a powerful ally, but it is not a substitute. It is a tool that amplifies human capabilities and needs human intervention to work really well.
In an age when we talk about “artificial intelligences that talk,” it is worth remembering that behind every word generated by a machine, there is still someone who taught that machine to speak.
