We can safely say that the absolute star of 2024 in Venice was Marco Polo, the Venetian merchant, explorer and writer who travelled through Asia in 1271. This year, from the ‘voyage to the Orient’ themed Carnival to various exhibitions and displays, Venice has never stopped paying homage to this great explorer. And now, on Saturday 20 July, the magical Festa del Redentore will have as its theme ‘The Lights of Marco Polo’, to celebrate the 700th anniversary of his death.
Imagine the sky above St Mark’s Basin lit up for 40 minutes by fireworks evoking the stages of Marco Polo’s voyage: the red of oriental spices, the deep blue of the Mediterranean, and a final golden cascade symbolising the wonders brought back by our explorer. It will be a fireworks display curated by Parente Fireworks that you won’t be able to forget.
The celebrations begin today Friday 19 July with the opening of the votive bridge connecting the Fondamenta delle Zattere to the Basilica of Christ the Redeemer on the island of Giudecca. But the magic will continue tomorrow night, when fireworks will also light up Asseggiano, Malcontenta and Pellestrina, and Murano, Marghera and Gazzera will be enlivened by activities and music.

Sunday 21 July will be the time for the traditional Regatta of the Redeemer in the Giudecca Canal, followed by the Votive Mass in the Church of the Redeemer at 7pm.

Remember, AVM/Actv informs you that, on the occasion of the Festa del Redentore, from 19:00 on Saturday 20 July to 02:00 on Sunday 21 July 2024 the transit of vehicles will be suspended on the Grand Canal, Giudecca Canal and Bacino San Marco between Rialto.
