Consecutive Interpreting – In consecutive interpreting, typically used in business meetings or interviews, the interpretation is delivered after the speaker has finished a segment of their speech, at regular intervals. In order to remember what the speaker has said and the order in which ideas were presented, the interpreter takes notes that help ensure a faithful rendering of the message. Speaker and interpreter therefore alternate: the speaker pauses at the end of a point, or after a few minutes, and gives the floor to the interpreter.
Since each segment of the speaker’s speech may last several minutes, the notepad becomes the interpreter’s essential tool.
