Thanksgiving Day is one of the most important holidays of the year in the United States and falls every fourth Thursday in November, which this year was 23 November.

Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1621, when the Pilgrim Fathers gathered to thank the Lord for a good harvest, but the celebration of Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863, during the War of Secession.

Every year on this occasion, the President of the United States receives a gift of two turkeys, which are pardoned and brought back to live on the farm.

An important part of the Thanksgiving feast is the food, as the whole family collaborates in preparing the feast. Some of the traditional dishes are turkey with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and for dessert pies of different flavours such as pumpkin, pecans, sweet potatoes and apples.

Happy Thanksgiving!
