We are officially in the Easter season and, in order to put you in the right mood, we have prepared a ‘delicious’ article. Easter is one of the most heartfelt holidays in predominantly Christian countries, and is one of the classic times for families and friends to get together. Some get together for a meal, some exchange chocolate eggs and others put their hands to the dough, following tradition to bake the typical cakes of the period. So how about taking a look at the most famous ones from around the world?
Let’s start with England, with its delicious hot cross buns. These are sweet buns with sultanas and cinnamon inside and their special feature is that they have a cross made of icing as a decoration to recall the passion of Jesus.
We move to Germany where the Hefezopf is eaten at Easter. It is a dessert made of brioche dough that is braided and enriched with sugar. Its presentation is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful.
We change continents and arrive in Mexico, where Easter is celebrated with capirotada, a sweet and spicy bread stuffed with sultanas, cinnamon, cloves and cheese. The ingredients have a special meaning, each representing the suffering of Christ: the cloves and cinnamon are respectively nails and sticks of the cross, the bread, on the other hand, the body of Christ.
Eventually, we conclude this gastronomic journey with the typical Easter cake of our city, Venice. Yes, we are indeed talking about the Venetian focaccia (or fugassa), which cannot be missing from family tables on Easter Day. Historically, fugassa was the typical cake for weddings, but with the passage of time it changed role and became typical of Easter. The origins of the cake date back to the 15th century. Initially, some dough was taken from the version with candied fruit and spices, from which the classic fugassa was made, with nothing inside.
