What are the origins of Carnival? The word carnival comes from the Latin carnem levare, meaning “to remove meat,” because in the past it referred to the banquet held on the last day of Carnival, Shrove Tuesday, before the period of abstinence and fasting imposed by Lent, during which no one was allowed to eat meat.
The establishment of the Venice Carnival by the Venetian oligarchies is generally attributed to the Serenissima’s need to grant the population, especially the lower social classes, a period entirely devoted to entertainment and celebration, with music and uninhibited dancing.
