With the update to version 5.9.6 on February 28th, Zoom introduced the relay interpreting feature, which allows users to switch from the main audio channel to listen to interpretation in another available language. For example, you might not understand the French spoken on the main channel, but you may understand English, so you can listen to the English interpretation channel and then interpret it into the language assigned to you as an interpreter.<\/p>\n
Is this a major step forward for interpreters? The answer is: yes and no. While relay interpreting is certainly a very useful feature in multilingual events, the immediate, day-to-day needs of interpreters are more basic, namely, the ability for two colleagues working in the same language combination to hear each other, in order to ensure terminological consistency, linguistic support, and, in practice, everything we are used to when working together in an on-site booth in so-called \u201cshared-booth\u201d mode.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
