Organising an international event involves making many decisions. One of them is choosing the most suitable interpreting service.

Simultaneous, consecutive or liaison interpreting? The answer depends on the context. A conference with hundreds of participants has very different requirements from a business meeting or a conversation between just a few people.

Understanding the differences can help you choose the most effective solution.

Simultaneous interpreting: when communication needs to be immediate

In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter listens to the speaker and translates their words almost at the same time.

This mode is particularly suitable for conferences, congresses, conventions and international events, especially when there are many participants or several languages are involved.

Its main advantage is fluidity: the audience can follow the speaker without lengthy interruptions, while the overall timing of the event remains virtually unchanged.

Depending on the event, the service may require interpreting booths, headsets, receivers and other specific technical equipment.

Consecutive interpreting: listening, taking notes and interpreting

In consecutive interpreting, the speaker talks for a few minutes before pausing to allow the interpreter to convey the content in the target language, using specific note-taking techniques to support the process.

This mode is particularly suitable for presentations, institutional meetings, interviews, press conferences or events with a limited number of speakers.

It does not necessarily require a booth or complex technical equipment, but it does take more time, as the interpreter speaks after the original speaker.

Liaison interpreting: communicating without barriers

When communication involves only a few people, liaison interpreting may be the most appropriate solution.

The interpreter works alongside the participants, interpreting short exchanges between the two languages and helping the conversation flow naturally and directly.

This solution is particularly effective for business meetings, commercial discussions, factory visits, meetings with clients and suppliers, and international negotiations.

In this context, the interpreter is not simply a voice: they become an integral part of the communication process.

Which type of interpreting should you choose?

The right choice depends on several factors, including the number of participants, the duration of the event, the languages involved, the venue, the level of interaction and any technical requirements.

For a large conference, for example, simultaneous interpreting helps maintain the pace and continuity of the event. For a shorter or more institutional speech, consecutive interpreting may be preferable, while liaison interpreting offers greater immediacy during a business meeting involving only a few participants.

So the question should not simply be “Which type of interpreting is best?”, but rather “Which type will help everyone communicate most effectively in this particular situation?”

The right solution starts with the event

At Finking, we analyse the specific requirements of each project to identify the most suitable interpreting solution and organise the service from a technical perspective as well.

From selecting the right interpreters to providing the necessary equipment, every detail contributes to effective communication and a successful event.

Because when people who speak different languages can communicate without feeling the language barrier, interpreting is doing exactly what it is meant to do.
